How we got our name on the marquee

How we got our name in lights. Seriously. On the marquee of a theater. It was the best night of my professional life.

Inspired by a Chrysler commercial starring Eminem and a ragtag bunch of hockey players who beat the powerhouse Soviet Union in the Olympics, it was a gift. For our team and on many levels, for me.

There is a beautiful theater in Newport, RI. The Jane Pickens Theater. It has an old-school concession stand and they serve cocktails.

We rented the theater. A private showing for our team. We watched the movie Miracle about the 1980 Men’s U.S. Hockey Team. Just us. In a theater. Cheering for the underdogs. Cheering for our tribe of investors and boutique asset managers. Cheering for ourselves.

Our reserved Director of Operations was so inspired, she ran up and down the aisle, leading the whole firm in a chant, "U.S.A." which eventually turned into "H.C.P." I miss seeing our team in person and I will never forget that night.

When we can be together again, we’ll do it again because it’s as much about the journey as the destination. It’s all about who is with you, by your side.

When you can, do it. Find the theater. Do the thing for the people who lift you up. Whatever it is.
